When Should Snow Tires be Replaced?

Forgive us if we sound like we’re repeating ourselves, but the subject of winter tires is a hot one with everyone at Bannister Honda. Winter tires are so essential because they provide an additional layer of safety while we’re navigating snow- and ice-covered roads. Sure, there are several functional differences between snow tires and other types. But, they are still tires, and they need to be paid some considerations, like getting new ones when necessary. So, when should snow tires be replaced? Let’s take a look at some crucially vital information you may be overlooking.

How Long Do Winter Tires Last?

Like any other kind of tires, snow tires have a certain lifespan. How long they last depends on a lot of various factors, like vehicle type, how they’re used and overall maintenance. However, the industry average is between four and six seasons. Winter tires are generally made from a softer, more pliable rubber compound that is great for increased traction on slippery surfaces, but it comes at the cost of long-term resilience.

Measuring Tread Depth

Of course, if you come to the Bannister Honda Service Department, we’ll be happy to take a closer look at your winter tires and let you know if they’re good to go for another season. However, if you’re more of a do-it-yourself type, you can always keep an eye on the health of your tires using the Twoonie method.

  • Place the Twoonie in the grooves of the tire with the bear facing to the left.
  • If the rubber meets up with the bear’s feet, those are very healthy tires.
  • If the rubber covers the word, ‘Dollars,’ those tires have about 50% tread.
  • In the event the rubber doesn’t even make it to that point, replace those tires.

Getting the Most Out of Winter Tires

Winter tires are an investment in your own safety, but nobody wants to spend money they can avoid spending. There are a few simple things you can do to make sure you get the most out of each set of winter tires you put on your car, truck or SUV.

  • Drive Carefully: Taking it easy on winter tires and avoiding unnecessary wear and tear by spinning them on frigid surfaces will do a lot of good.
  • Keep the Pressure Up: Modern tires don’t need to have air let out to improve cold-weather traction. Keeping your tires properly inflated will slow down tread degradations.
  • Proper Storage: When the tires aren’t being used, keep them away from damaging chemicals and sunlight. These will quickly break down the rubber, increasing the chances of tire failure.
