Summer is here and that means that the outdoor temperatures will remain high. While this does feel great to us after a long cold winter, your vehicle’s engine may think otherwise. 5 Tips to Keep Your Engine From Overheating

  1. Flush Out Your Radiator. Before the high heat of summer begins, it’s a good idea to visit your local automotive service department to flush out your radiator and have new engine coolant poured in. This can help prevent your engine from overheating.
  2. Check Your Coolant Levels. During the summer months of driving in the heat, it’s good practice to check your coolant level to ensure it is still filled up to recommended levels.
  3. Check Your Temperature Gauge. While you’re driving in hot weather this summer, be sure to frequently check the temperature gauge of your vehicle to make sure it is not going up (getting hotter). If it is higher than normal, be sure to pull over to let your engine cool down.
  4. Turn on the Heat. A good way to help your engine cool down while driving is to turn on the heat. This can help cool down your engine and keep it from overheating.
  5. Use Fresh Air When You Turn On Your A/C. Instead of blasting the air-conditioning with recirculating air when you first get into your hot vehicle, change it to fresh air so the hot air in the engine compartment moves. Also, try not to keep your air conditioner running the entire time you are driving on a long trip.

If you think your vehicle may not be ready for the heat of summer driving, we encourage you to visit or contact the automotive service department at Bannister Honda in Vernon, BC, to have a professional help get your vehicle ready for summer. We hope to hear from you soon.
